100 Favorite Movies of All Time

So Nathan Bransford made up a list of his Top 100 movies and urged his followers to do the same.  I, being a big ol' movie geek, happily took the challenge.  They aren't really in order of preference (I'm bad about ranking the things I love) but here they are -- 100 movies that changed my life (and that I try to inflict on everyone when I realize they haven't seen them).

Things I learned while crafting this list: It's harder than it looks.  After 25, I started straining; by 50, it was really hard to remember.  Also, I have a pretty clear preference for certain things (mindfuck movies, for example) and hardly ever watch other things (romances?).  I think this list says something about me as a person, and most definitely about me as a writer.

What's your top 100 list look like?

  1. I hate to bust your chops, but you listed Jaws twice!

LOTR, Star Wars, Almost Famous and Labyrinth would all be on my list as well. Man... have I even seen 100 movies? =p I'm such a movie snob that this would be a very difficult list for me to compile!

    1. I have seen...a whole lot of movies. The Top 100 is hard, though, as there are some movies I watch again and again...but not 100 of them.

  2. I like your list better than Bransford's... love some of the SF additions like Gattaca and Stargate. But you did list Jaws twice - was that intentional?

    1. Curses! It seems inevitable that I'd have a repeat in there somewhere with how long it took me to compile it. I'll have to go fix it. Of course, that will require me to think up another movie...

  3. Oh man - here I go!

    1. The Elephant Man
    2. The Lord of the Rings
    3. M
    4. The Man From Nowhere

There are dozens more I could add to the list, but there are also dozens upon dozens of films I have yet to watch that I'm sure will become favorites. My brother has been urging me to watch Magnolia for the last few years.

If I were to sum up my taste in movies, it'd probably look something like: thriller, mindfuck, drama, animation, and goofy as all get-out. :D

    1. Seeing as how we have such deliciously overlapping interests, I'll have to raid your list for my "to watch" list. And you have GOT to watch Magnolia, man. It's so fantastic. I think you'd like Adaptation too.

    2. I actually referenced your list to remember some of my own favorites, haha! Coming up with 100 movies IS hard. I see used copies of Magnolia at my favorite music / movie store all the time, so I might just have to pick it up so I have it. And I'll have to watch Adaptation at some point!
